  3. What is Brain Hearing
Hearing and especially speech understanding
require cognitive processing. The ears receive sound, but it is the brain that processes the sound information and gives it meaning. Every time a sound is missing, the brain tries to fill in the gaps, and it often turns out to be difficult and tiring. Good hearing is not just about hearing sounds well enough. Good hearing is about helping your brain understand the sounds you hear.

Protecting against cognitive decline?
Lifestyle factors such as smoking and obesity are known to increase the risk of dementia. In recent years, research has shown that untreated hearing loss can increase the likelihood of impaired mental skills or dementia*. A recent study published in the Lancet on Dementia Preventive Factors found relative risk of dementia was most strongly correlated with hearing loss**. It was also found that the worse the hearing, the greater the chance of dementia. Since hearing loss is one of the risk factors that can be treated, the authors of the article recommend the use of hearing aids.
